- Where is Weißenkirchen? In the Wachau in Lower Austria.
- Is the visit worth it? Yes, Weißenkirchen can be visited at any time of the year. The Wachau is particularly popular during the apricot blossom at the end of March. Even in summer you can swim wonderfully along the Danube.
- What are the highlights? The parish church of St. Michael, the fortified church of Weißkirchen and its Teisenhoferhof
This place is very popular with visitors to the Wachau because it is nestled between the Danube and sunny vineyard hills. In the middle rises the fortified church of Weißenkirchen, which can be seen from almost every point in the area. The late medieval fortifications were built around 1530 and are largely preserved. Together with the Teisenhoferhof below, it forms a uniform weir system. The Teisenhoferhof, one of the most beautiful Renaissance courtyards in the Wachau, is part of the imposing fortifications of the church. As a cultural center, the Teisenhoferhof is now the platform for festivals (including the Riesling Festival), the Wachau Festival and exhibitions by well-known artists.
The romantic wine-growing town of Weißenkirchen has retained its originality and is one of the most popular vacation spots in the Wachau World Heritage region. Many cyclists and hikers stop here in town.
Even today, a large part of the inhabitants live from viticulture, which is reflected in the construction of the houses. Here you can comfortably enjoy a good glass of wine in one of the guest gardens. But be careful: it’s best to check the Heurigen calendar to see when it’s open. Incidentally, the region of Weißenkirchen is believed to be the origin of the Riesling vine typical of the Wachau.
Incidentally, there are beautiful sandy beaches on the Danube directly in front of the town, which are wonderful for swimming in summer.
