Resting on the left bank of the Main, Miltenberg is classically quaint with its fountained squares, farmland, biking and pedestrian paths, castles and one of Germany’s oldest inns. This town literally oozes charm.
With the Rhine on one side and snuggled against the mountains, Miltenberg has changed little since the 17th century. We had a very informative walking tour with a local guide. His name was a tongue twister to this Western mind, and he suggested that we call him “Batman”.
One of our stops was a short in and out loop through a wine cellar built into the side of the mountain. Quite effective at keeping the barrels cool.
The overhead shop signs always fascinate me in older towns in Europe.
The decorative doors also have such character.
Passing by a small shop, our guide pointed out a local specialty – pizza made on top of a gigantic pretzel in place of a traditional pizza dough. So, me being the inquisitive person that I am, I had to try it! Thankfully Tim, Brenda and Steve were also willing participants. Instead of a tomato sauce, it has more of a creamy cheese sauce.
We ordered one pizza to share with half having ham and sliced red onion and the other half vegetarian topped with arugula and drizzled with balsamic. The one pizza was about the size of a generous dinner plate and was sliced into 8 pieces, giving us the opportunity to try both kinds. Brenda and I ate our share and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not so sure it was as big of a hit with the guys.
When our time in Miltenberg ended, we hopped back on our bus and we’re transported to the nearby winegrowing community of Bürgstadt.
Here we were warmly welcomed by the mayor and entertained by the local “Umpah band”. We were served hearty glasses of their local wine and a traditional Brotzeit snack.
After being both refreshed and entertained, the mayor invited us to their local chapel to ring the bell.
Back on board, it is 70’s night!
As luck would have it, Tim and I already had at least part of a 70’s costume remaining from a party we had attended roughly 10 years ago.

GRATITUDE MOMENT: Today I’m grateful for having such easy going traveling companions who are willing to try new things like pretzel pizza, ringing the chapel bell and dressing up ready for the disco. We are taking advantage of every opportunity to live life to the fullest, experience something new, explore new locations, and on occasion push ourselves slightly outside of our comfort zone (like Tim and I out on the dance floor, lol).
We most sincerely appreciate it when you “like”, “share”, “comment”, “subscribe”, and/or invite your friends to follow along.
There is a pizza shop in New Orleans that makes the crust out of pretzels. If I could have Tim’s shirt and a pair of matching shorts that would be the bomb. Happy travels.

I appreciate you pointing out various things I may miss along our daily excursions.
Signs, door hardware, flowers grow in in bricks… I learn so much from you.
Thanks for showing us the ins and outs of river cruising. We are having a blast!
The highlights for me were sharing the pretzel crust pizza, the mayor greeting us so warmly and staying with us during our stay there, the musicians playing, and the delightful and oh so pleasant hostess sharing history and her experiences.
They were so gracious, and very generous in their wine pours, snacks, and making sure we all had a great time.
What a day!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Hi Alice, I’ll certainly honor your request. Sorry, I have never had anyone ask that before so I don’t know how to do that. Unfortunately while we are in Europe I have limited access to the Internet and will need to research how to do that when we get back home in about a week. Tim and I hope you and Rod are both doing well.

What a wonderful day/night you all had. It’s very impressive that the Mayor greeted you. That sure is a nice welcoming. Your disco outfits were great. Where do you find clothes like that? I know you said you had yours and Tim’s for awhile. Food looks delicious and the presentation is beautiful. Looking forward to what today has in store for your travels.

The Mayor was delightful and seemed genuinely welcoming. Our costumes were from a costume store in Canoga Park. We found Tim’s bell bottom jeans at Salvation Army for $10. They were brand new with the tags still on them. The food has been wonderful and yes, they do such a nice job with presentation which I think is such a huge key. I’m just about to start organizing my pictures and thoughts from todays tour. Not sure if I’ll get this one done tonight though before falling asleep. 💤

Loved your 60’s garb! You really get more out of trips like these when you participate in as many things as you can. You never want to get home and say, “I wish I would have done that!”
Thanks for such a detailed post!
