Kim Jong-il Promotes Son to General
Looks like Dad finally picked his favorite third son Kim Jong-un, 27, to be the leader of the North Korean dynasty, today. Kim Jong-il promoted his son to the rank of general or "dae-jang," according to the official North Korean news agency KCNA, in this classic case of nepotism.
North Korea, the nuclear-armed country, is notoriously secretive about its hierarchy, but today's announcement came as expected. With the aging leader getting increasingly frail, there had been intense interest as to who will succeed his position. Unfortunately, like all other news that comes out of North Korea, little is known about the chosen son, even to North Koreans. Rumors are that he has studied in the Swiss city of Berne, and is an avid fan of NBA games.
The announcement comes a day after the much anticipated and rare Workers' party meeting, which was expected to hear the confirmation of Kim Jong-un's elevated rank. Watch the video of delegates arriving at the party meeting below:
