2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony: 'Fake Lesbian' Duo t.A.T.u to Play

t.A.T.u, the Russian pop star duo who caused a huge stir with their lesbian antics when they first burst on to the music scene more than a decade ago, will perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi on Friday, Yahoo! Sports report.

Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova are best remembered for the hit single "All the Things She Said," released in 2002. It was a No. 1 hit in several countries including the United Kingdom, and caused controversy for the raunchy video, in which the pair, then just teenagers, wore schoolgirl dresses and held one another.

Years later, however, an article from The Sun (subscription only) reported that they weren't really lesbians at all.

As the Huffington Post report, using quotes from The Sun:

But after a story broke where Katina said it 'wasn't fun playing lesbians anymore,' the duo released a statement for their gay fans. 'When t.A.T.u.'s second album came out, many of our fans of alternative sexual orientation thought that we lied and betrayed them. This is not true! We've never done that and we've always advocated love without boundaries.'

The same report adds that they have marched in gay pride rallies in Moscow, so as a choice for Sochi's opening ceremony it is perhaps a nod to a more tolerant Russia.

However, there will be plenty of people who find it a strange union, while some will find it ironic that at the same time as Russia lives under rules that outlaw promoting "non-traditional sexual relations" that they have t.A.T.u, whose act appeared to trade on their lesbian image to sell records, as one of the faces of the opening ceremony.
