The following post aims to give a concise breakdown of Sweden and Finland’s relationship. Since the material can be used for both shipping and friendship purposes, I’ve tagged things accordingly.

It’s one-sided:

In a lost 2007 blog post, Himaruya confirmed that Sweden has homosexual feelings for Finland and only acts this way for Finland [That’s exactly what the translation says]. Whether people still take this as canon is up for debate, but future material does corroborate it. For example, Sweden has referred to Finland as his wife multiple times.

On the other hand, it’s important to note that Finland doesn’t reciprocate these feelings. He rejects the wife label.

There’s also this infamous scene, well known because of its adaption in the anime, where Sweden hugs Finland to keep him warm at night.

Disconnected Misunderstandings:

Another important facet of their relationship is that Finland constantly misunderstands Sweden. Sweden isn’t as expressive with his emotions—not to be confused with expressionless—and is mistakenly understood to be angry and “ominous”.

In reality, he’s incredibly soft-hearted, so much so that he gets embarrassed at nice thoughts that he has.

When the two first run away from Denmark, while still scared of him, Finland begins to realize that Sweden is hard to communicate with. It’s simply a matter of learning how to read Sweden’s body language given that he’s not much of a speaker.

Another instance would be Finland interpreting Sweden to be laughing when in reality he’s simply blushing at the thought of making Finland happy.

This perplexion still carries on in the present, but not to the same degree.

Ex: Finland becomes shocked when Sweden speaks to him immediately after the New Year’s countdown. Again, keep in mind that the running gag is that Sweden barely speaks.

Now, this is where fans tend to get confused. They interpret the latter strips and come up with the conclusion that Finland is still scared of Sweden. This isn’t true. In more recent strips, Finland has learned to read Sweden very well.

Ex: He tells a crying child that Sweden isn’t angry despite his “looming” aura.

There’s even a joke in World Stars where the other Nordics mock Sweden’s unintentionally intimidating expressions. Nonetheless, it’s indicative of their understanding of him. They can tell when he’s smiling.

Romantic Potential:

As mentioned, no canon material has substantiated mutual romantic feelings between them. The examples below will merely be tools for creators who wish to depict their relationship more accurately.

Sweden and Finland have been implied to be a family unit.

Ex: There’s Sealand, who they adopt after buying him off an online auction.

Ex: When they began building colonies in America, Sweden asks Finland if they want kids. Granted, this is after Finland had just spotted Young America in the wilderness.

There’s also the 2013 Halloween event that I’ve often seen brought into the discussion of this ship. While I don’t think it’s as paramount and self-explanatory as others have played it out to be, it’s still significant.

Denmark gets worried that the other Nordics are lonely without wives. Sweden replies that having a wife would make him happy but trails off, leaving things open-ended. Finland then asks for clarification.

How I read this—keeping in mind that Sweden has called Finland his wife before—is that this panel illustrates that he’d be happy having Finland in his life, wife or not. The other reading is that he’s talking about having another wife, although, given Finland’s reaction, I’m less inclined to believe this interpretation.

That said, I wouldn’t say that it’s impossible for Sweden and Finland to be together. There’s enough material to make work of the ship. Their relationship is just trickier and more complicated, requiring that creators recognize that there has been a steady progression in their relationship over the course of centuries.
