  Historic and Scenic Spots
Yuelu Mountain

Yuelu Mountain is located on the west bank of Xiang River. The mountain used to be called the foot of Heng Mountain so it is called Lu (foot of the mountain). Its highest altitude is 297 meters. Since the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), many historic sites have been left, including Yuelu Academy, Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple and Wangxiang Pavilion.

Two scenic spots of Yuelu Mountain have been opened to the public -- Lushan Scenic Spot and Juzizhoutou Scenic Spot. Lushan Scenic Spot is the essence of the whole area; it contains Yuelu Acamedy, Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple, Yunlu Palace, New Democracy Association. Yuelu Academy, which is located in the mountain, was the top of the four academies during the Song dynasty (960-1279). Aiwan Pavilion is one of the four great pavilions in China and was built in the 57th year of Qianlong. It is also the place where Chairman Mao carried out his revolutionary activities.

Yuelu Scenic Spot neighbors Heng Mountain in the south, Dongting in the north, the plain in the west and the lake in the east. When it is quiet, it is like a winding dragon. When it is dynamic, it is like a running horse.
