Changsha

With a long history stretching back more than 2,000 years Changsha has a reputation as "Home of Quyuan and Jiayi" and "City of Chu-Han." It is one of the "Famous Cities of History and Culture" evaluated by the State Council and one of the first tourist cities in China to open to the outside world. As early as the Spring and Autumn Period, Changsha was one of the key strategic locations for the Chu state to occupy the south. After the establishment of the Han Dynasty by Liu Bang, it was renamed Linjiang in 206 B.C. The surrounding region is rich in resource and there is a highly developed economy and transportation system. Celebrities and scholars have emerged from Changsha in large numbers since ancient times. Local culture and art is extremely prosperous and enjoys high status in China's literary history.

On February 15, 1904, the Huaxing Association was established in Changsha. Huang Xing was the chairmen of this association, and Song Jiaoren and Liu Kuiyi were the vice-chairmen. After the Wuchang Uprising, the members of Hunan Revolution Party were the first to respond. On October 22, 1911, Jiao Dafeng, Chen Zuoxin and others led the new revolution soldiers and the members of the association to revolt. They succeeded in occupying Changsha.

But on May 21, 1927, the Kuomintang, led by Colonel Xu Kexiang, started a rebellion throughout Changsha, attacking the Provincial Labour Union Peasant Association and other revolutionary organizations in Hunan. Xu arrested and killed more than 100 communists, workers and peasants. As in the secret telegram on May 21, the event was called "the Ma Date Incident." This refers to a visual rhyme related to the date and the Chinese character "ma." In August 1930, the "Central Red Army" was made up of the First Army of the Red Army and the Third Army of the Red Army, with another name "Red One Part Army."

On August 5, 1949, Cheng Qian, Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Government and Chen Mingren, the 1st Corps Support Commander, which was garrisoned in Changsha, revolted. Thus Changsha was peacefully liberated. The Changsha Municipal People's Government was established at that time.
