The Douglas squirrel, or chickaree (Tamiasciurus douglasii), is found in forests in western North America (it's a close relative of the more northern American red squirrel T. hudsonicus; the two species may overlap in southeastern Alaska). A major part of their diet is conifer seeds, and they also eat mushrooms and other fungi, as shown here. The photos were taken in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in coastal northern California, and in the Sierra Nevada; note the color variation (especially belly color). |
