Japanese Squirrel (Sciurus lis)
These small, long-eared, large-eyed tree squirrels are endemic to the Japanese Islands. They are specialists in natural mixed-species forests and pinewoods in subalpine areas, The amount of gray on the back and tail varies seasonally with more extensive gray during the winter as seen here. They are not particularly tolerant of humans and some populations have disappeared after forest fragmentation or local urbanization. Canon PowerShot SX60.
