Anyone who has visited Puglia at least once will certainly not have forgotten to admire one of the symbolic places of our region, a city whose name is inextricably linked to its architecture.
Alberobello is one of the 51 Italian sites declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
This town retains a historic center that is unique in its kind because it is made up entirely of Trulli, ancient buildings with a very particular cone-shaped roof in limestone typical of the plateau of the Murge.
The construction of these houses did not involve the use of mortar, probably because in this way they were considered precarious structures, easy to demolish, and therefore not taxable.
In reality, the trulli are more than stable constructions, consisting of a lime masonry that encloses a circular space, with a cone-shaped roof made up of limestone slabs called "chiancarelle".
Strolling through the historic center of Alberobello is equivalent to making a journey through time: before diving into the visit of the village, it is worth stopping on the Belvedere Terrace from where you can admire the historic center from above: a panorama made up of more than a thousand trulli , with the beautiful covers decorated with imaginative and mysterious symbols.
We recommend accessing the village from the Aia Piccola district which still has four hundred inhabited trulli. The neighborhood is a corner of peace and tranquility, interrupted only by the cheerful shouting of the kids playing in the winding streets, between alleys and clothes hanging in the sun.
Walking through the Aia Piccola, you reach the "Museum of Old Crafts and New Trades", where it is possible to admire tools and instruments of the artisan and peasant culture and the beautiful "Oil Museum", housed in an ancient oil mill, where you can taste the precious extra virgin olive oil and some of the typical products of the area.
Continuing towards Piazza XXVII Maggio, you come across another important museum, the Museo del Territorio, while in the nearby Piazza Ferdinando IV, there is Casa D'Amore, the first house built in Alberobello in 1797 with mortar and without the classic form of trullo.
A visit to the Minor Basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano, in piazza Curri, a fine example of a neoclassical style church, is not to be missed. From here, not far away, another monument of the art of building trulli, the Trullo Sovrano, considered the most advanced example of a two-storey trullo.
Completed the tour of the Aia Piccola, you reach the Rione Monti, a wonderful expanse of more than a thousand trulli arranged along narrow streets animated by local and artisan shops, here you will also find the church of Sant'Antonio which with its particular trullo shape it is a unique temple in the world.
Relax quietly along via Monte Nero, via Monte Pasubio and via Monte San Michele where you will find the oldest trulli and you can relive an atmosphere of other times.
