Once Man and Dragon were one. Man chose Land and Sea, Dragon chose Wind and Fire.

Something bizarre has come over the land. The kingdom is deteriorating. People are beginning to act strange... What's even more strange is that people are beginning to see dragons, which shouldn't enter the world of humans. Due to all these bizarre events, Ged, a wandering wizard, is investigating the cause. During his journey, he meets Prince Arren, a young distraught teenage boy. While Arren may look like a shy young teen, he has a severe dark side, which grants him strength, hatred, ruthlessness and has no mercy, especially when it comes to protecting Teru. For the witch Kumo this is a perfect opportunity. She can use the boy's "fears" against the very one who would help him, Ged.

Worse than I expected tbh. An agonizing failure at worldbuilding with the dullest characters and story to ever be featured in a Ghibli film. Hilariously lifeless direction. Princess Mononoke had more levity than this trash. I wanted it to be over from the 15 minute mark and it just kept going for an eternity. To be fair Willem Dafoe is good in it.
I feel bad for Goro Miyazaki; like, he clearly wasn't ready to take on a feature film and I can only imagine the pressure he was under to make something up to the studio's (and his father's) usual standard. I pin the blame on the studio for allowing him to take on this project; however, for his first feature, it honestly could've been worse.
I do not anticipate being this forgiving to Earwig and the Witch.

Loosely based off "The Farthest Shore", the third book of Earthsea novel series by Ursula K. Le Guin, Tales from Earthsea is based in a mythical land, where a man and a young boy investigate a series of unusual occurrences in a deteriorating kingdom.
Similarly, to Ocean Waves, Tales from Earthsea had a premise that deeply intrigued me. Without being biased, the Medieval setting is always one I adore. The time period, backdrops and storytelling from this era has always intrigued me and whilst Tales from Earthsea does a good job at building the world, they never fully landed with the execution.

The epitome of biting off more than you can chew.
Tales From Earthsea is crammed with interesting ideas and characters but never takes the time to explore or develop any of them. Maybe more impressively, for a movie with dragons, it also finds a way to be massively boring.

Gorō Miyazaki, I am so sorry but yikes. I have never, ever rated a Ghibli film so low.
Epic in its subject matter, it’s quite clear that Tales From Earthsea took too large of a bite to chew when it comes to its plot. As a result, there’s bizarrely so much going on without it ever feeling like anything is really going on. It was a truly confusing sensation. Even still, the gorgeous aesthetics are here as always. While Miyazaki’s directorial choices don’t seem to translate well here, the animation team has done an exceptional job that one typically expects from Studio Ghibli!

i really couldn’t get into this and it makes me so sad because i love studio ghibli so much. also the poster is misleading because i was expecting lots of dragons, but there were not enough dragons

I still think this is underrated. Sure it has its flaws, but I always enjoy watching it. Also it was Goro Miyazaki's debut. Cut the man some slack.

Too much sad boi, mysterious, and heroic moments. Should have added more witchcraft, wizardry, and dragonussy. But same with other Ghibli films, I got hooked with the animation style. Also, I was amazed by Theru’s singing voice.

You might remember me traumatising my niece with films like The Shining or Prisoners, but this and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are the movies that started it all. The OG niece traumatizers.

Hi everybody, I already knew some Ghibli works, but this film was a blind purchase. The tale about a magician and his friends, which fights against an unknown force that threatens to destroy the world.
Everyone who’s familiar with the works of Ghibli, will not be disappointed, at least not in artistic aspects. Beautiful painted landscapes and wonderful characters. The screenplay is well written, with nice dialogues and a cute massage. The movie mostly based on the third book of the „Earthsea“ cycle and is being expanded by some characters from the fourth and fifth book. And exactly that is the problem of this work from the Ghibli studio. As good as the adaptation is, it’s more a free interpretation…
