Box-leaf Spindle A small, slow-growing form of the Japanese spindle, Euonymus japonicus Microphyllus is an evergreen shrub particularly useful in the aftermath of box blight as a substitute for box hedging. It clips very well, and is perhaps even more attractive than box, having bright new growth and more richly coloured leaves. Absolutely worth a try in formal gardens ravaged by box blight or box caterpillar, but perhaps not for the coldest areas. Makes a great low seaside hedge. Site: Tolerates exposure, and appears to be salt-tolerantSoil: Any reasonably well drained soilPosition: Full sun, shade or partial shadeSeason of interest: All yearHardiness: Reasonably hardyHeight: 6’6” (2m) Spread: 6’6” (2m) if left unclipped
