Luxor Museum: An Archaeological Gem in the Heart of Egypt

Perched on the corniche with a captivating view over the west bank of the River Nile, the Luxor Museum is an archaeological treasure trove located in the ancient city of Thebes, now Luxor, Egypt. This two-story museum was officially inaugurated in 1975, housing a thoughtfully curated selection of artifacts that might be limited in quantity compared to the extensive collections of the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo, but are unrivalled in quality.

The Conception and Creation of the Luxor Museum

The Egyptian Ministry of Culture envisaged the Luxor, commissioning the esteemed Egyptian architect, Dr. Mahmud El Hakim, to design the plans in 1962. The meticulous installation of the museum's artworks took place over several years, culminating in 1975.

A Peek into the Rich Collection

Visitors to the museum are treated to an array of exceptional exhibits, including grave goods from the tomb of the 18th dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamun (KV62). A highlight is the collection of 26 New Kingdom statues, discovered buried in the Luxor statue cache at the nearby Luxor Temple in 1989. In March 2004, the royal mummies of two pharaohs - Ahmose I and Ramesses I - were added to the display as part of the museum's new extension, which also includes a small visitor centre.

Featured Exhibits and Artifacts

A major attraction at the museum is the reconstructed wall from Akhenaten's temple at Karnak, offering fascinating insights into ancient African art and architecture. One of the most admired pieces in the collection is a calcite double statue, representing the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Amenhotep III alongside the crocodile god Sobek.
