Last night Adele released “Rolling in the Deep,” the first single from her upcoming sophomore album “21,” and we here at PopWrap are officially making her our mascot.
Adele is a big slap in the noodle pouch to all those artists who come back on the scene with a jewel case full of junk. Ya’see, the follow-up album for any new artist is crucial — if it’s great, then it establishes you as the real deal. Someone whose talent transcends a micro-managed freshman album. If it fails … you are primed for inclusion in a “One Hit Wonders” special on VH1.
Duffy, another artist prepping to drop her sophomore release, is tinkering with dance tracks (“Well, Well, Well”), disco tunes (“My Boy”) and doo-doo singles (“Endlessly”) on the new disc. This makes it seem as though she doesn’t feel confident in what worked so well the first time around. It’s one thing to add a few layers to who you are as an artists, but after hearing more and more of Duffy’s new stuff, I’m scared she may be rocking multiple per-song-ality disorder.
Adele on the other hand has delivered a track which proves she knew everything about round one worked, which is good because the familiar claps and quick guitar plucks accompanying her vulnerable vocals prove she is the real deal.
