Quercus coccinea ‘Splendens’

This selected form of the N American 'Scarlet Oak' is a magnificent sight when the very beautiful, deeply lobed foliage turns to a rich, glowing scarlet in the autumn sunlight. If only this and other exceptional American oaks were planted more often, to achieve more large bright-red autumn colouring trees in our gardened landscapes. Fast growing on most soils apart from thin alkaline, making a grand specimen eventually. I have a distinct memory of walking past a specimen of this in a local park as an unknowing child and being rather taken aback by its leaf shape and colour.
