Széchenyi Square

This cathedral is one of the most important religious landmarks in the city, and with good reason, as it has been preserved over the years since it was built in the 11th century.

Walking through the streets of the old town, you’ll find numerous buildings and squares that stick in your memory.
One of these memories that is hard to get out of your mind is the Vienna Gate Square, a beautiful Baroque-influenced square that you must see in Gyor.
If you’re wondering about the origin of its name, it’s because this was the entry point for all visitors coming from the Austrian capital: Vienna.
The square is home to interesting monuments, such as the Carmelite Church (discussed below) and the Clock Tower.
Church of the Carmelites
Continuing our tour of the city’s most emblematic landmarks, we come across the Church of the Carmelites, a spectacular religious enclave renowned for its famous domed tower.
And it is that this construction of baroque style, was erected three centuries ago, in a very careful and detailed work. Its yellow façade is easy to recognize, as well as the statues of the Carmelites guarding the door.
Of course, be sure to visit the interior, as there are many works of art to see and admire, such as the main altar and side altars, which were built in the 1720s and still retain their charm.
Püspökvár: the Castle and Episcopal Palace to see in Gyor
If you head to the top of Káptalan Hill, you will find one of the most renowned monuments to see in Gyor, a residence where the bishops were laid to rest and which is a true work of art.
It has elements of different trends, including Gothic, which can be felt in the elements found in the first levels of the palace.
There are also Renaissance and Baroque elements, such as the Baroque pediment on the lower level. It is well worth seeing, as everything is in an excellent state due to the restorations that have been carried out.
You can visit the interior of the complex from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 16:00.
In addition to all that awaits you inside, the surrounding area is a worthwhile place on its own, offering spectacular views of the city.
Városháza, Gyor’s city hall
One of the most visited sites in the city, the Városháza is an impressive monument of neo-baroque influence in its design and one of the must-see sights in Gyor.
Designed by Hübner Jeno during the 19th century, this splendid building is more than 80 metres long and has impressive green-domed towers crowning the grounds.
The façade is one of the most recognisable in the city and features important symbolic elements, such as Gyor’s coat of arms.
Of course, inside you can see marble sculptures of the monarch Stephen V and József Bisinger, an important figure who lived in Gyor during the 19th century.

What to See Around Gyor
The Abbey of Pannonhalma
Gyor is a city that, like Budapest, is littered with memorable buildings to see and among them, just outside the city, you’ll find Pannonhalma Abbey, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It sits atop a hill and is one of the largest abbeys in the world, with a beautiful mix of architectural designs, ranging from Romanesque to neoclassical elements.
The whole place is a worthwhile visit. It is easy to get to from Gyor, as it’s only about a 20-minute drive from the city. Don’t worry, there are organized tours of the site that will take you to and from the city at the end of your visit.
The Castle of Bezerédj
This mansion, far from the city centre, is one of the places worth seeing around Gyor. In fact, it is not only the monument itself that is worth seeing, but also the views it offers from the top of the hill.

How to get to Gyor
From Spain, there are many flights to Hungary. Although to get to Gyor you will have to make a stopover in a city such as Budapest.
Flights to Budapest are around €140-200 from cities such as Madrid and on dates such as May.
The train from Budapest to Gyor takes about an hour and a half and costs around €10, so it won’t cost you much to get there.
