Matt Damon Says He's 'Anxious' to Do Another Jason Bourne Sequel Soon: 'I'm Not Getting Any Younger'

A new Bourne movie is in the works, but Matt Damon cannot yet say he will star in it.

Damon, 53, fielded a question from Stephen Colbert regarding a reported upcoming Jason Bourne sequel during his Tuesday appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. When Colbert, 59, asked Damon whether he has been prepping to reprise his leading role as former CIA assassin Jason Bourne, the actor denied knowing details of plans for a sixth installment in the franchise.

"No details have been given to me! There's a great director named Edward Berger who directed All Quiet on the Western Front. German director, he's wonderful, and he said he had an idea," Damon shared on the late-night show. "I would love to work with him - he's working on it. I'm as anxious as you are to see if this thing is - I hope it's great and that we can do it."

"At a certain point, someone's gonna need to take it over. I'm not getting any younger," he added after Colbert asked whether Damon could guarantee the project gets made.

Damon first portrayed Bourne — a man found shot and with no memories of his past who then discovers he was an agent for a top-secret U.S. intelligence program — in 2002's The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman.

The series was inspired by author Robert Ludlum's books; it spawned an initial trilogy completed with 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum.

Damon returned to the role for 2016's Jason Bourne, but in 2012, Jeremy Renner and Edward Norton starred in 2012's The Bourne Legacy, a spinoff of the series that followed Renner's own spy character Aaron Cross.

Deadline reported in November that Universal Pictures was in the early stages of developing another sequel in the action franchise, with filmmaker Berger attached to direct the project.

Casting for the movie had not yet begun at that time, per the outlet.

Berger's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1928 World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front won four Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards in March 20223, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best International Film.

Back in 2017, Damon told The Toronto Sun that a new Bourne movie "would have to be a pretty incredible story to get us all back on the horse."

For now, the actor has several new movies in development or releasing this year. Damon next appears in Drive Away Dolls, in theaters Feb. 23; he also lends his voice to a part in John Krasinski's upcoming movie IF, in theaters May 17.
