The “Zum Riesen” inn in Miltenberg has an eventful history behind it. The Gothic predecessor of today’s Renaissance half-timbered building dates back to 1158, which is why the building, which was also used as a princely inn, is considered one of the oldest inns in Germany. The half-timbered building that still exists today dates back to 1590 and was built by the carpenter Jakob Stoer. In the course of the following centuries, the innkeepers changed frequently – some of them met a cruel fate. For example, in the 17th century two innkeepers were accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death at the stake. After a short closure in 1999, the inn was reopened in 2001.
