Built during the Staufer period in the 12th century, Wertheim Castle once served as the seat of the Counts of Wertheim. After being destroyed in 1619 by a powder explosion and during the Thirty Years’ War, the castle was subsequently renovated and expanded. Today, with its deep ravine moat and extensive defences, it is not only one of the largest and most beautiful castle ruins in Germany, but also the landmark of the town of Wertheim. In addition to the castle itself, the view of the river landscapes of the Main and Tauber is particularly impressive. Today, Wertheim Castle serves as a popular excursion destination as well as a romantic backdrop for numerous cultural events in summer.
