Coast pine is a woody tree native to coastal western North America. It grows 20-50 feet tall and 10-25 feet wide, with a wind-swept, twisted trunk and irregular branches bearing short, dark green needles. It is fast-growing but relatively short-lived for a pine, living 50+ years. Coast pine blooms in spring and its female cones mature in fall over two years, providing seeds for birds. It is tolerant of wind, salt spray, and poor drainage, making it suitable for coastal gardens and containers.
