If you enjoy the intoxicating fragrances in the garden, Michelia figo – Banana Shrub is next to none! Creamy white flowers open in the spring then fade to yellow with the aroma of ripe bananas. The flowers open and resemble tiny Magnolia blooms with a slight crimson edge. Michelia figo – Banana Shrub is a heavy bloomer, so there will be plenty of flowers and fragrance to go around. Handsome glossy foliage of this evergreen shrub makes for a versatile landscape plant. If left alone, it can grow into a stately “shrubby tree”. Be sure to plant near entrance ways of windows so that the fragrance can be enjoyed.
Care
Plant in well balanced soils that have good drainage. Once established, the Banana Shrub is quite drought tolerant and cold tolerant. Yearly pruning and fertilization are all this care free shrub needs. Fertilize in early spring with our HICOTE 360 day slow release fertilizer for maximum growth and plant health.
Companion Plants
Paring other shrubs and perennials is an easy pick. Most ground covers will look great in front of the glossy green leaves. Anything blooming will stand out especially oranges, reds, and yellows like Coneflowers or Daylilies. Banana Shrub also is a great border plant and is very effective as a hedge.
