Periwinkle, Vinca Minor "Bowles" is a hardy groundcover plant that produces gorgeous pinwheel-shaped violet blue flowers with white centers that grow on dark green foliage from early spring to early summer. It will bloom again sporadically during the summer into the fall. Growing 6-12 inches tall and wide, Bowles Vinca Periwinkle is the perfect groundcover for small landscapes and under shrubs. This plant is known for being able to cover large areas quickly, being a favorite of pollinators and for its ability to add color to darker areas. Bowles Vinca Periwinkle was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its beauty.

Care

Bowles Vinca Periwinkle prefers organic rich, neutral to slightly acidic soil that is well drained. It can thrive in full sun when planted in cooler climates, but if planted in hotter climates, it should be planted in an area that has partial shade. Bowles Vinca Periwinkle likes moist but not waterlogged soil. It should be watered deeply once a week and more often in hotter conditions.

Bowles Vinca Periwinkle does not need much feeding; however, a balanced slow release fertilizer can be used in early spring and mid summer to encourage growth. Pruning should be done regularly to keep the plant healthy and encourage growth. A layer of organic mulch, 2-3 inches thick can be placed around the plant to help with moisture retention and suppress weed growth. Be careful to not cover the stems of the plant. When planting, dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and ensure the top of the root ball is even with the surface. Water often until the plant is established.

Uses in the Landscape

Bowles Vinca Periwinkle makes an excellent groundcover plant. Use is to brighten up darkened areas of the landscape or to cover large areas. It is perfect to grow under shrubs or atop bulbs to protect their roots. Plant it along banks and slopes to create a sea of color. It is a great choice for planters, containers or even hanging pots.  Bowles Vinca Periwinkle grows in zones 4-9, is deer and rabbit resistant, and attracts bees and butterflies. It is evergreen in most climates and is perfect for weed control or planted in mass to cover hard to mow areas.
