Syringa vulgaris, or the common lilac, is a small tree in the olive family of Oleaceae native to the Balkan Peninsula. They are commonly cultivated for their beautiful and fragrant violet flowers which bloom in early summer. S. vulgaris usually does not grow more than 15 feet tall. Syringa vulgaris are hardy to zones 5-7. The common lilac is also the state flower of New Hampshire.

Cold stratify the seeds by placing them in a bag of moist sand or perlite and refrigerate the seeds for 1 to 2 months before planting. Plant the seeds ¼” deep in a well drawing potting soil and keep between  65°F to 75°F for best results. Germination typically takes 3 to 8 weeks to occur.
