A journey to unify spirituality and science for world peace
Commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, Buddha Purnima is widely observed across the world by Buddhist sects. The teachings of Buddha have never been more relevant to the whole world than it is today. Ranging from non-violence, truth, meditation, spiritual attainment, and compassion, Buddha’s teachings are believed to help manifest world peace.
Buddha’s message on world peace states that when man overcomes suffering by giving up evil thoughts, he experiences inner peace. This inner peace projects itself outside toward family, friends, society, and the world. This leads to greater harmony and world peace.
During the recently-held Global Buddhist Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the importance of Buddha’s teachings for world peace. “It is universally accepted that today’s era is the most challenging time of this century. The world is going through economic instability. Threats such as terrorism and religious fanaticism are attacking the soul of humanity. Buddha had preached about abandoning war, defeat, and victory for eternal peace. He taught that enmity can never be countered with enmity. There is no problem in the modern world whose solution we cannot find in the teachings of the Buddha. Lord Buddha also said happiness lies in unity and living together with all people.”
Prosperity comes through peace. World peace is very important for the economic growth and sustainability of the countries. It reduces uncertainty and risk, infuses positive and fair participation from all aspects, and helps build a sustainable future.
9th World Parliament of Science, Religion, Spirituality and Philosophy that took place in February this year, at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor has become a a Knowledge Corridor after the Parliament. Dr. Vishwanath Karad, Founder President, MIT-World Peace University, Pune, talked about world peace. “The future will depend upon the decisions and actions that we take today. It could either be peace, tranquility, and prosperity or global conflict, destruction, and horrifying disaster, putting the very survival of the human race itself at stake.”

During the same event, Dr. Karan Singh, MP, Rajyasabha, also said, “It is astonishing that thousands of years ago our seers had realized that, in the final analysis, the human race must be looked upon as a single family. Unfortunately, despite great technological breakthroughs, our minds are still mired in pre-global concepts. Unless we look upon the human race as a single family, we will surely end up destroying both the natural and the human environment. Vasudaiva Kutumbakam therefore has to be the key concept of the emerging global society.”
