Top Tips for Visiting Kravica Waterfall in 2023

Kravica Waterfall (or Kravice Waterfall) is one of Bosnia’s most beautiful natural wonders and simply can’t be missed when you are in the region.

For us it was one of the highlights of our entire trip throughout the country and the refreshing water was more than welcoming on an incredibly hot summer day.

Even just a decade ago this place was virtually unknown, however recently it has seen much more construction in the area, so we’d recommend visiting soon before the natural beauty is tarnished.

With that said, keep reading to find out all you need to know about visiting Kravica Waterfall!

What is it?

Kravica Waterfall is not one large fall but is actually a collection of smaller waterfalls that all cascade down the same cliff and empty out in a scenic and swimmable basin.

The source of the water is the Trebižat River which also feeds into the much larger Neretva River (if you spend any time at all in Bosnia you will surely cross paths with the river at some point).

The falls are about 25 metres high and curl around the pool in a protective arc which makes you feel in the heart of nature while you swim.

How to get there

The Kravica Waterfall is located in southern Bosnia close to the border with Croatia and around an hour’s drive from Mostar.

Getting to the falls can be a little tricky if you prefer to do your own independent travel as car hire and public transport can be difficult to arrange.

The best option is to go on a prearranged tour or ask your hotel to book you a taxi. When we went, we took a private tour with Funky Tours and incorporated a few other local sites into our trip.

We really couldn’t recommend them enough so check them out here.

Upon arrival you will find a large car park and a small ticket booth. once you’ve paid your 10KM (£5) entry fee you can then make the short walk down the hill towards the falls.

Things to do

Take in the view

Kravica Waterfall is one of the most naturally beautiful places in Europe so when you are there, you should really take the time to appreciate it.

There are plenty of spots where you can grab some awesome photos so make sure you stop and take it all in.

Have a swim

A visit to Kravica Waterfall simply wouldn’t be complete without taking a dip in the water – this was one of the best things we did in Bosnia!

Competent swimmers should have no issue going out across the deeper areas to reach the foot of the falls where you really feel one with nature.

If you’re not the best swimmer don’t worry as there are still plenty of shallow areas where you will feel comfortable.

It’s worth noting that there’s changings room at the top of the hill just past the ticket booth but also a couple facilities at the water you can use too.

Take a boat trip

During the warmer months you can extend your trip at the falls by hiring a kayak or going on a boat tour of the area.

You can find the ticket booth for this down by the water’s edge and the prices are very reasonable!

We didn’t have enough time to go on one during our trip there but will definitely do it on our next visit.

Grab some food

A recent addition to the area around the waterfall is a decent sized restaurant/café where you can grab a bite to eat and take in the stunning view. This is of course super convenient if you are hungry, however lots of people think its appearance detracts from the natural beauty of the falls.

If you want to save a bit of money, then you can always bring your own picnic as there are plenty of beautiful places to setup near the water.

Best time to visit

Because they are a natural site, the falls are open 24/7 365 days a year although you will have a very different experience depending on the month you go:

Winter – It can often drop to 0 Celsius during winter meaning swimming is certainly out of the question (unless you are incredibly brave!)

Spring – Often considered the best time to visit due to the warm (but not too warm) temperatures and quieter crowds of summer. The falls at this time will also be in high flow due to the amount of rain feeding into the river.

Summer – Expect exceptionally hot and exhausting days that make the water even more refreshing. With less rain, the falls will be less dramatic than other months but definitely still worth visiting.

Autumn – Like spring, autumn will see less crowds however the natural greenery will disappear leaving the area around the mouth of the waterfall slightly barren looking although the high waterflow will hopefully make up for it!

Tours

We included Kravica Waterfall as part of a larger cross-country trip that we booked with Funky Tours so if that is your plan then we highly recommend them.

Alternatively, the falls are a great day trip from Dubrovnik and Mostar so why not check out one of these awesome tours:

Accommodation

Because most people visit the falls on a day trip from Dubrovnik or Mostar, many don’t spend the night in the surrounding area. While there is less choice here than the big cities, there is still plenty of options to consider:
