About the Item
Immaculate, Early 20th Century Persian Sarouk
8' 11" x 12'
Incredibly well preserved mahi (fish design) rug hand woven in Sarouk sometime between the 1920's and 30's. Sarouks are incredibly attractive rugs that are well woven and well known. During the early 20th century these rugs were beloved by Americans. In order to appeal to American trends the majority of these beautiful rugs were painted with chemicals to tone down their vibrance. Sadly this practice affected the integrity of these pieces, which attributes to the difficulty of finding well preserved Sarouk rugs. Once the design took off in popularity these pieces began to be massed produced in color schemes and designs made specifically to attract American buyers. These newer productions quickly faded from popularity and now discerning collectors are hunting for examples of traditional Persian Sarouks. This piece features the traditional colors and stylings of its region, before the mass production of what are now referred to as American Sarouks. This piece is both authentic and breathtaking!
The pile of this piece is made entirely of fine Persian wool that is tightly hand knotted, resulting in a crisp design and incredibly soft pile. The quality of the work and materials are apparent, just by glancing at it. Because of the quality of this piece and its sized, this rug took a minimum of a year to complete.
The design of this Sarouk certainly makes it stand out. Sarouk rugs of this generation rarely featured repeating designs which makes it quite unique. The repeating design it features is known as the mahi design or fish design. The repeating pattern is supposed to resemble fish scale and dates bac 100's of years originating with the a Persian nomadic tribe known as the kashkoolis. This pattern has been adopted by many cultures, all of which have their unique interpretation. This piece repeats the design in a way that resembles a repeating diamond pattern, making it very satisfyingly symmetrical. Because this piece wasn't produced for the American markets, it features the traditional colors of the region. Rugs from this area always feature pink tones, creams and blues. These colors go well with any floor and its repeating design makes it easy to incorporate in any space. Truly a versatile and gorgeous rug.
Despite being close to 100 years of age this piece is untouched by time. It is in near mint condition with a full even pile and no stains or color damage. This piece is in astonishing condition for it age.
This piece, like the rest of our collection, was hand-picked by Persian Rug expert and Shiraz native, Jason Dadras. Each piece was acquired through the relationships he forged around the world. Our rugs are ethically sourced and have been legally imported.
