Primosten

Primosten is a charming little town situated between the larger cities of Sibenik and Trogir on the central Adriatic coast. It is accompanied by seven other islets and is a truly breathtaking destination.

At the time of the Turkish invasions in 1542, the village on the islet was protected by walls and towers and connected to the mainland by a draw bridge. After the Turkish defeat, the draw bridge was replaced by a causeway, and in 1564 the town was given the name Primosten, from the Croatian verb primostiti, meaning "to bridge over."

The old town centre's narrow streets and densely packed homes indicate the town's Mediterranean vibe and authenticity as a mediaeval Mediterranean fishing village.

Visit the parish church of St. Juraj (St. George), constructed in 1485 on the highest point of the former island. See St. Roko church, built in 1680 as a valuable cultural monument; the image of Our Lady of Loret; and the Church of Our Lady of Grace, constructed in 1553.

Highlights:

  • Choose from a wide array of daily excursions by a charming boat towards the numerous neighbouring islets. The crew will be happy to show you the authentic cuisine on the ship itself. Remember to ask if they serve octopus that day. It's a delicacy!
  • If you are active, rent a mountain bike and challenge yourself to the many bumpy and rocky bike trails crisscrossing the area. The main reward is the view at the end!
  • If you want to lay back, that's fine too! Many excellent restaurants and shops with local farm produce will tingle your taste buds.
