Identification
50–65 cm (19¾-25½ in)
Dark upper parts, chestnut underparts. It has a large area of blue, bare facial skin around the red eye.
Similar species
If not seen well could remind of several members of the genus Penelope
Distribution
Santa Marta mountains and the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Six subspecies are recognized[1]:
- C. g. goudotii:
- Andes of northern Colombia
- C. g. sanctaemarthae:
- Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia)
- C. g. fagani:
- Western slope of Andes of south-western Colombia and Ecuador
- C. g. tschudii:
- Eastern slope of Andes of southern Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru
- C. g. rufiventris:
- Eastern slope of Andes in central and southern Peru (locally Junin to Puno), northern Bolivia in La Paz
- C. g. ssp. (this is a form from Bolivia not yet formally described)
Habitat
Mostly old forest in humid to wet areas, but also sometimes in older second growth and shaded coffee plantations; has a preference for steep areas and other inaccessible spots. Found at mid elevation of mountains.
Behaviour
Normally a quiet bird with a secretive behavior, so not often seen.
Diet
The diet consists mostly of fruits and berries, with the addition of seeds and flowers.
