A popular variegated female holly.

 

Description
Despite its male name, Golden King, a popular, variegated holly is in fact female. It makes a compact, conical, evergreen shrub that has broad, ovate spiny leaves that are slightly shiny and variegated with dark green and a rich yellow edge. It produces small white flowers followed by pretty red berries in the autumn/winter, although the crop will be more prolific with a male plant nearby. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). conditions. 

 

Planting Position
It’s very hardy and tolerates most soils, as well as seaside air and atmospheric pollution, and fruits well in sun or shade. 

 

Attributes
This popular variety of holly is generally not prickly and as such can make an interesting hedge with its pretty variegated leaves and bright red berries.
