Foster and his wife paid $21.9 million for the main property, and an additional $475,000 for a .3-acre beachfront lot, making it one of the most expensive sales in Vineyard history.
Foster, who is a British lord, is known for designing the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the London headquarters for Swiss Re. His wife is a renowned academic.
Called Blue Heron Farm, the 28.5-acre estate was sold by Republican businessman William Van Devender, who initially listed it with an asking price of $23.7 million.
The private retreat, in Chilmark, has two full-size homes, an eight-stall horse barn and six paddocks, and a waterfall pool with hot tub.

It also has a par-3 golf hole and half basketball court--no wonder the sports-loving President chose to return to the spot over and over.
