Presentation of the Wang Family Residence in Pingyao
The Wang family’s residence is located in Jingsheng City, Shanxi. It is a large residential complex occupying an area of 250,000 m2. The Wang Family Residence was Wang Lan’s private residence, and consists of 123 courtyards and 1118 houses.Started in the middle of the 17th century, it was completed almost 150 years later. It demonstrates the quintessence of Chinese architectural art. Today, there are four parties open to the public : the East Court, the Red Door Castle, Shilv Castle and the Wang Family Temple. They cover an area of 80,000 m2 and contain hundreds of rooms.
What to see in the Wang Family Residence in Pingyao?
East courtyard (Gaojiaya)
Gaojiaya was built by Wang Rucong and Wang Rucheng. The construction began in 1796, to be completed in 1811. There are sculptures on brick, wood and stone, with different contents and themes. The succession of door and rooms is reminiscent of a labyrinth.
The West Court – The castle at the red door
Built in 1793, it covers an area of 25,000 m2 with 88 yards/gardens and 776 rooms. The castle was built on a hill and from the sky it looks like the Chinese character 王 (Wáng) which means “king”.
Chongning Bao
Built in 1725 in collaboration with other families. The style is similar to the Ming Dynasty’s.

Remarks
– On August 18, every year, the tourist festival of the residence of the Wang Family takes place, which brings together different activities.- During the Chinese New Year, you can attend a traditional “Shehuo” show.
