1994 - Linz

The Linz townLinz lies on the Danube in the north of Austria, in the province of Upper Austria.  It is the third-largest city in the country.  The idea of European unity and brotherhood has been alive in Linz for many years.

This is amply demonstrated in its many twinnings with towns in Council of Europe member countries: Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Halle, Linz am Rhein (Germany), Tampere (Finland), Nizhny Novgorod (Russian Federation), Dunaújvaros (Hungary), Gorizia, Modena (Italy), České Budějovice (Czech Republic), Norrköping (Sweden) and Zaporizhia (Ukraine). It is also twinned with Chengdu (China), Gabes (Tunisia), Kansas City (USA), Kong Kwangyang (South Korea), Monterey (Mexico) and San Carlos (Nicaragua). To promote understanding between peoples, Linz has encouraged international youth exchanges since 1960 and provides scholarships and arranges placements abroad for large numbers of students.  Its cultural role is also reflected in many international events.
