Caryopteris Clandonensis (Blue Mist Spirea, Blue Beard)

$14.00$53.00

This blue version of the common Spirea is a fun color twist and is valued for its late summer to fall flowers when few other shrubs are in bloom.

Commonly called Blue Mist or Blue Beard, this variety grows to 3-4 ft wide and tall making it a low-mounded addition to your landscaping. Its height depends in large part upon the extent of winter dieback and/or the annual spring pruning. (In Zones 5 and 6 the roots are fine but it is common to see winter dieback so must prune these annually.) But, these guys return to glory quickly by usually adding 18 and 30 inches annually.

The aromatic foliage of the Blue Mist Spirae attracts bees and butterflies. They also are great as cut flowers with their blue/purple blooms that resemble clouds of blue smoke or mist.

Spireas are easy to grow because they tolerate most soils and don’t require much water. They are great in full sun to part shade. Additionally, It is ideal but not required to prune each winter or early spring because it flowers on new wood.

If this variety isn’t the right height and color for you there are over 80 other options of Spiraea (often called Spirea). Although Colorado Hardy Plants doesn’t carry all 80 choices, we do carry many other sizes and colors.Fun fact: Spiraea contain salicylates a component of aspirin. The “spirin” part of the word comes from the German word for Spiraea.
