The lengthy rant came after former English cricket star Kevin Pietersen was refused entry to the Qantas first class lounge for wearing thongs.

Australian singer Kate Ceberano also found herself on the wrong side of fashion law after she too was booted from the airline's lounge for 'inappropriate footwear'.

While it is unknown what airline Ms Eckhardt-Delaney was travelling with, Qantas Domestic Lounge Dress Guidelines state members must adhere to a smart-casual dress code that excludes thongs.

The same rules do not apply for passengers on board the aircraft.

Ms Eckhardt-Delaney appeared to disagree as she made it clear to her 44,000 Instagram followers 'thongs on planes are not okay'.

'A confined space, where other people's heads are less than 50cm away, is not the place to have your ugly, hairy, smelly man-foot out,' she wrote on Instagram.

'It is rude. It is unhygienic.

'Ladies, this applies too, even though yes female feet are generally nicer, but the woman next to me and two in front are also wearing them.'

While Ms Eckhardy-Delaney was unable to hide her disgust at the inappropriate footwear, controversial batsman Kevin Pietersen referred to thongs as 'an institution in this great country'.

After he was refused entry to the Qantas lounge Pieterson, 35, took to Twitter to vent his frustration.

'I suggest you tell Platinum, First Class fliers that they not allowed in your lounges with flip flops before they fly, @Qantas! Muppets!,' he wrote.

'Thongs are an institution in this great country! GET A GRIP! Tired, jet lagged & just wanted to chill! #Muppets.'

Australian crooner Kate Ceberano expressed her disappointed on social media after she too was evicted from the Qantas lounge for wearing thongs, but later back-tracked and said 'I respect the rules :) I love Qantas X,' alongside an image of herself with Qantas staff.

The 35-year-old wore a pair of thong-like sandals on what was a 35 degree day in Melbourne.

An employee working at the lounge previously told Daily Mail Australia they were unhappy to ask the singer to leave but were adamant that no exceptions would be made for her celebrity status.
