Height: 70 - 90 feet tall (will usually die before attaining this size)
Foliage: alternate, simple, deciduous, and deltoid shaped

2 - 5 inches long
Flower: catkins are not showy; male clone
Bark: light green, gray, white on young trunks

older trunks are deeply furrowed with dark ridges

Soil: tolerates poor soil conditions

Maintenance: weak wood commonly leads to many twigs on the ground
Pests & Pathology: trees are susceptible to many diseases and pests (Cytospora canker, borers, etc), so trees seldom attain full size
