This auction is for 20, 30 or 50 seeds of these varieties or a mix of all ten species/varieties (20, 30, 50 of each variety) you choose, Freshly collected in 2019, home grown organically in the UK of these fully hardy shrubs. Cotoneaster bullatus is found in Sichuan, Southwest China. Cotoneaster Cornubia is thought to be a cross or complex cross of the Himalayan Cotoneaster frigidus and Cotoneaster salicifolius from Western China which is thought to originate from the 1930's and was raised in the gardens at Exbury, Hampshire, UK. Cotoneaster Exburiensis is thought to be a hybrid of a yellow berried form of Cotoneaster frigidus crossed with Cotoneaster salcifolius and was also raised in the gardens at Exbury, Hampshire, UK. Cotoneaster dammeri is from Central and Southern China. Cotoneaster franchetii is from Southwestern China, Northern Burma and Northern Thailand, described by French Botanist Adrien René Franchet. Cotoneaster horizontalis is found in Western China. Cotoneaster salcifolius is also from Western China and was also described by Franchet. Cotoneaster microphyllus is from the Himalaya. Cotoneaster simonsii is found in the Northeast of India - Sikkim and Bhutan. Cotoneaster x Suecicus is a man made hybrid of the Tibetan Cotoneaster conspicuus and the Bearberry Cotoneaster dammeri from Central and Southern China.
Cotoneaster bullatus
This is a great large sized deciduous shrub. Ideal for a spot at the back of the border, as part of a tall hedge or as an individual large shrub or standard. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 4m (13') high and across, though often stay far smaller and are easily pruned as a large shrub. It bares rich green deeply veined ovate leaves and a profusion of small light pink flowers in Spring through Summer. These are followed by masses of bright red clumps of pendulous berries which last right through winter. Great autumn orange - red leaf colour! Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster Cornubia
This is a great large sized semi-evergreen shrub or tree which has received the Award of Garden Merit from the RHS. This is one of the few Cotoneasters that can be considered a tree and bares rich green elongated oval leaves that are semi-evergreen, often lasting right through winter. Ideal for a spot at the back of the border, as part of a tall evergreen hedge or as an individual tree or standard. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 8m (26') high and across, though often stay far smaller and are easily pruned as a large shrub. It produces a profusion of small white-pink flowers in Spring through to Summer. Followed by masses of bright red berries which last right through winter. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster dammeri
Is a rounded evergreen shrub with small, glossy dark green leaves and is covered in hundreds of small white flowers in spring - summer which are then followed by bright orange-red berries. It grows to around (3' 3'') 1m high and 8' (2.5m) across, producing long arching stems that often trail on the ground and can easily be pruned into a tight low hedge. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster Exburiensis
This is similar in growth, laf and flower form to Cotoneaster Cornubia but grows smaller to around 5m (16') high and across, though often staying smaller and can be easily bruned as a large shrub. It produces an abundance of small white-pink flowers in Spring through to Summer. Followed by masses of bright yellow berries which fade to a lovely apricot pinkish colour over time, lasting right through winter. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster franchetii
It is a great medium sized deciduous shrub which has rich green glossy oval-acute leaves that are semi-evergreen/evergreen with grey hairy undersides, often lasting right through winter. Ideal as a pruned or specimen shrub or for creating hedging or covering walls. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun or partial shade, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 9.8' (3m) high and 6.5' (2m) across. It produces corymbs with a profusion of small flowers with petals that are pink on the outside and white on the inside. These last from Spring through summer and are followed by masses of bright red/orange berries which last right through winter, that is if they are not eaten by the birds first.. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster horizontalis
It is a great small sized deciduous shrub with small gloss dark green leaves which turn bright orange/pink/red in autumn. Ideal for creating low hedging, covering walls and ground cover. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 3'+ (1m) high and 6'+ (2m) across. It is covered in small white - pinkish 5 petaled flowers during May to June which are followed by red-orange berries in autumn through to winter. Great for pollinators and berries are devoured by birds.
Cotoneaster microphyllus
Is a rounded evergreen spreading shrub with very small, glossy dark green leaves which is covered in small white flowers in spring - summer, followed by glossy reddish-pink berries. It grows to around (3' 3'') 1m high and 8' (2.5m) across, producing long arching stems that often trail on the ground and can easily be pruned into a tight low hedge. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
Cotoneaster salcifolius 'Repens'
It is a great small sized deciduous shrub which has alternate rich green glossy elongated oval leaves that are semi-evergreen/evergreen with gray hairy undersides, often lasting right through winter. Ideal for creating low hedging, covering walls and ground cover. It does well in well drained but moist sites in full sun, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 2' (60cm) high and 8' (2.4m) across. It produces corymbs with a profusion of small white flowers in Spring through to Summer. Cotoneaster simonsii
It is a large, upright, semi-evergreen shrub with small, glossy oval or elliptic leaves and white flowers, followed by rather large, bright scarlet berries in autumn. It can grow eventually to around 8' (2.5m) high and across. Long season of interest, great for pollinators and birds!
