It is well known that all Davenport desk have a hidden draw that raises up through a complicated system of ropes, pulley’s and lead weights, without this it is not and cannot be referred to as a Davenport desk, I am in possession of such a desk and needed to know how the pulley system was put together hence my reason for purchasing these diagrams sadly they refer only to the manufacture of the carcass, when I enquired with the seller I was told that the desk that they restored and drew the diagram from did not have a hidden draw, if it was a genuine Davenport then I find this hard to believe and I am convinced that they copied a reproduction and therefore it’s not worth the paper it is written on.

Dereck is mistaken on his 2 key points:- 1. The plans are described truly in Etsy as: “The design is based on a measured drawing of an actual antique desk that came through our Somerset workshop in the 1980s and was restored by Tim Ashby with the drawings being made by Peter Ashby (architect and designer-craftsman).” The original antique Davenport Desk oozed quality & originality:- the patina of the flame mahogany, dry timber & brass, the drawers, design proportions, the entasis on the columns - everything was right about this desk and was not the reproduction Dereck claimed (without having handled it). 2, Many antique Davenport Desks online have the same arrangement of components without hidden drawers as the original antique in the Ashby plan.
