ITEM DESCRIPTION (16250):
A beautiful woman's folk costume from the Rimoc/Holloko area of Paloc region in northern Hungary. The costume includes an embroidered blouse, hand-knit vest, red satin skirt, embroidered apron, beaded necklace, waist ribbon sash, and two-piece headdress (cap + folded shawl). The headdress shawl is specially folded over a cardboard frame and held in place with many pins. The shawl is worn over the small beaded cap to which it is pinned when worn. This style of folk dress came into fashion in the middle of the 20th century and can still be seen in use today during festivals and holidays. Uncommon to see this complete costume for sale, especially with the headdress.
NOTE: The costume does *not* come with any underskirts, but you will want to add some to get the characteristic shape of the skirt. If you don't have anything suitable, I have several underskirts from the region available that can be purchased separately. Please contact me if interested.
Measurements are approximate and taken with article(s) laying flat:
Blouse - across front: 20" side to side
Blouse - length: 16.5"
Vest - across front: approx. 18" between underarms (the knit fabric is stretchy)
Vest - waist: 32" around
Vest - length: 15.5"
Skirt - waist: adjustable up to 34" around
Skirt - length: 23.5"
Apron: 24.5" long
Ribbon sash: 113" long
CONDITION: Very good condition with minor signs of age. The beaded cap has a worn-out hole where it has repeatedly been pinned to the scarf. This is completely covered by the scarf and doesn't affect the look. You might want to mend or patch the hole though to keep it from getting larger. Some of the pins in the folded shawl are loose, but overall the costume is in excellent condition.
A note regarding condition: All of the costumes and textiles that I sell are vintage and have typically seen decades of use resulting in expected wear and tear that add to the history and authenticity of each piece. In case of above-average wear, I will mention any significant damages and heavy signs of use. Depending on the age, materials, and condition, I often hand-wash more durable, colorfast cotton and linen textiles, but embellished garments, heavier wool pieces or items made from silk or fine fabrics are sold in the original, unwashed condition. Small holes or stains, missing sequins/beads, worn trim, and other marks related to standard wear are common and do not detract from the value of most pieces. Please keep in mind that a vintage textile or garment in very good condition might still show signs of use, storage and age.
Not sure about the condition? Need more photos? Sure! Etsy allows up to 10 photos online, but I often have more images available so please send an e-mail request for more.
I am located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA) and local shoppers are invited to view or try on items in person before buying. Many other garments are available so please don't hesitate to email your specific requests.
