The Hydrangea Anomala var. 'Petiolaris', better known in Holland as Klimhortensia, is native to Japan and Northeast Asia. This climbing plant grows there mainly in woody and mountainous environments. The climbing hydrangea belongs to the group of self-attaching climbing plants. With its adhesive roots, it can attach itself to practically any surface and can reach a maximum height of up to 4 to 5 meters. If you do not let the Hydrangea 'Petiolaris' climb, you can also grow it nicely as a shrub or ground cover. The maximum height of the shrub is then about 2 meters. The hardy shrub flowers from June to August with beautiful large white flowers.
Care
The Hydrangea 'Petiolaris' is not very critical in terms of location or soil type. This makes it a very popular climbing plant. However, keep in mind that when the plant is in the shade, it will produce fewer flowers than when it gets a lot of sunlight. The climbing hydrangea is not a fast grower, but it can eventually reach a height of up to 4 to 5 feet. The climbing hydrangea grows both vertically and horizontally, so it can be guided nicely into the desired shape and direction. If the climbing hydrangea really gets too big, you can easily prune it. The best time to do this is right after flowering or in winter.
