Leonardo Cuéllar resigns as Club América Femenil manager

It was as bad a loss as they’d experienced in recent memory, but losing at Estadio Azteca 4-2 to Chivas proved too much as head coach Leonardo Cuéllar stepped down during a brief press conference after the match. Cuéllar was the only manager that Club América has known, who will now have assistant Hugo Ruíz take the helm for the remainder of the season.

Cuéllar’s tenure was one of highs and lows. The expectations of Club América are always to win silverware, and América did just that in the 2018 Clausura tournament. But that memorable season aside, the club never made it past the semifinal round and is in real danger of missing the Liguilla this season. Currently América sits in ninth place and could drop lower, depending on the result of tomorrow’s match between Tijuana and León.

América has a talented roster, and perhaps a change in leadership will be enough to salvage the season. Cuéllar’s legacy with the club will be mixed. The early teams were dominant, equal to the Regiomontano teams and perhaps being a bit unlucky to not have added another trophy. But the writing was on the wall, with many fans of the club clamoring for Cuéllar’s ouster for a couple of seasons.
