1. Male strobiles (catkins) develop in the leaf-axils on the under side of the one year old branchlets; a section of a two year old branchlet with fascicles of the persistent budscales of the male strobiles of the previous year. - 2. Buds of male strobiles. - 3. Female strobile (a), and a developing young cone (b) on the previous year's shoot. - 4. Mature cone and branchlet with a bud (k) of female strobile. - 5. Cone axis is persistent on the branchlet after the conescales fall. - 6. Conescales: seed scale with bract (modified leaf) as seen from outer (abaxial) side (a), and inner (adaxial) side (b). - 7. Seeds with wing (a, b). - 8. Seed after the wing was removed. - 9. Seedling with a whirl of the stelate cotyledons and first leaves. After Hempel & Wilhelm, 1889.
