Nina Dobrev is plotting her return to broadcast television.
The former Vampire Diaries star has been tapped to topline the CBS comedy pilot Fam in what would be her first series-regular role since she departed the CW drama.
Fam revolves around a woman whose dreams of an upstanding life with her new fiancé and his upstanding family are dashed when her younger train-wreck half-sister comes to live with her to escape their train wreck of a father.
Dobrev will play Clem, the former hot mess who has worked to get her life back on track. She’s a charmer who is happy when Jay, the love of her life, proposes. In a bid to be the best version of herself, she claims that her estranged father, Freddy Banks, is dead when he is very much alive. When her half-sister Shannon (Odessa Adlon) unexpectedly shows up, Clem’s lie is about to become painfully obvious, putting her relationship with Jay in jeopardy.
Corinne Kingsbury (The Newsroom) penned the script and is executive producing the CBS Television Studios multicamera comedy alongside David Rosenthal, Kapital Entertainment’s Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor and TrillTV’s Wendi Trilling. Scott Ellis is directing the pilot. The cast includes Brian Stokes Mitchell as Jay’s father and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Jay’s mother.
Should Fam go to series, it would be Dobrev’s first broadcast regular role since she exited The CW’s Vampire Diaries after a six-season run. Her film credits include XXX: Return of Xander Cage, Flatliners, Crashpad and the upcoming indies Dog Days, Departures and Lucky Day. She is repped by CAA and Lighthouse Management and Media.
