Great looking grafts. Can't wait until you guys get your Sharp Cheddar's planted out to see what the color is going to do.

Question: What does this mean about your Acer japonicum 'Emmett's Pumpkin' two chip buds and a side veneer graft

Nice pics! Looks like a successful grafting season. That 'Mt. Hood Marble' is a neat plant. I too am curious to see how that 'Sharp Cheddar' colors up. I am going home next week and will take pictures of the mother plant to show its current color and spring push color.

    Good job Keith.

Harv, I'll send you a 'Sharp Cheddar' on Monday if you'd like.

Cher, a chip bud is exactly what it sounds like. A single bud is cut off the maple (very common graft for maples) and then on the seedling-understock a slit is made with a knife and the bark is peeled to the sides and then, the chip is inserted. Grafting chip buds allows grafters to make enormous amounts of plants from minimal amount of wood/buds. Furthermore, that single bud can push a lot of growth in its' first season.

Thanks Dax. Hadn't heard that referred to on conifers so figured maybe it was something on trees. Kind of even thought that myself but then I'm thinking, nah surely they need more than a little bud. :) That's interesting.

Thanks all. It has been fun to watch them wake up. Turned hot and muggy here the past couple of days, so I hope they are ready for the warm up.

Nice pictures, your grafts are looking great, Keith.

One thing I'd really like to learn more concerns the double grafts on the conifers and the triple on the maple. What I'm wondering is, since you have multiple takes, will you pick one and remove the other(s), and if so when would you consider doing it? If you leave them both on, I imagine you might get competing leaders in the case of upright trees. Just asking because I think it's a really interesting idea.

    Thanks,
    Alex

    Thanks Ken, Dan & Alex

Alex, I double grafted some of the conifers to conserve rootstock. I will leave all takes in place and just see what develops. I am not opposed to some aggressive pruning in the future to shape the plants.

The maple I will leave as is. It was an experiment. I certainly didn't expect all 3 to take.

2-grafts at varying heights - keep one and reuse the other for future grafting material.
