I love the blue colors on A. lasiocarpa.

What is that neon green mold under your bench?

All of us have it in western Wa.
Makes for a nice groundcover in those difficult places to plant those hard to site plants. ;-)

how big do these things get over 20 to 30 years? Width and Height? Will they take part sun/shade?

In Ontario I'd suspect they'd be about 10 X 10 in 20 years.

You'd have to be more specific about the shade. I have lasiocarpa doing well with about 6-7 hours of direct sun.

10 x 10? Interesitng... so not exactly uptight like the one pictured by maackie. Quite a fat tree then..

Mine does have a fastigiate habit. I've left it plenty of room and I hope it fills out right to the tips of the Tsuga 'Jeddeloh'...but no further. :)

Look at coniferbros post HERE (near the bottom) of the one at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum. It shows the habit I see most often.

wow! That is FAT... looks like a giant shrub more than a tree... No distinguishable leader either. It seems that they pruned it. Also, it's not really blue. Are you sure we are referring to the same tree?

Some pix from the American Conifer Society are HERE. They vary in color and shape. Also note the name 'Gauca Compacta' is now just 'Compacta'.

Not sure if this would work in the spot I am thinking about.. looking for a more narrow, typical pyramidal that's still "dwarfish", in other words, doesn't take up a huge space in 20 + years like a typical colorado or Norway
