Abies balsamea and fraseri gallery 2012

dietzjm

I think these galleries are what makes this Conifer Forum great. They are easily accessible through google and usually contain dozens of different cultivars. If Garden Web doesn't like them, too bad.

Abies balsamea 'Old Ridge': becoming more and more common, and for good reason. This picture is from early May.

And this is from this week:

Abies balsamea 'Josh's Ornament': thick, widely spaced needles

Abies balsamea 'Gunflint Trail'

Abies balsamea 'Lakewood'

Abies balsamea 'Jorma'

Abies fraseri 'Paul's Broom'

Please add some of yours.

Matt

Wow, some beauties Matt, a scion-wood swap perhaps we need!

I'll show a few once I get home from work.

Abies balsamea 'Old Ridge' It's a good one, indeed, Matt. One of my favorite conifers of all time. I enjoy variegated conifers (especially rare cultivars), and I like firs in general.

Sam are you sure of that 'Rawles WB'?? It looks more like an Abies koreana cultivar? Here is my specimen:

    Abies fraseri 'Rawles WB'

Abies fraseri 'Reeseville Selection' A narrow-upright selection.

Abies balsamea 'R. Stevens' - looks very small.

Sam, please rename your Abies fraseri 'Blue 'Bonnet' into
    Abies fraseri 'Wingle's Blue Bonnet'.
This is the renaming the founder gave to his plant in honor of himself.

Will, the Abies balsamea 'R. Stevens' grows very slooooow...
This is quite an old specimen.

Friends, be aware of the size the following plant may get...

    Interesting proposition, Will.

I do notice that the coloration is slightly different, but the buds aren't right for Abies koreana.

Where did you get 'R. Stevens'?

    -Sam

'R. Stevens' was a Spring purchase from Dennis Dodge.

I really don't know which of ours is right Sam, I just know one of them cannot be right! :)

A few more this morning while it's cloudy.

Abies balsamea 'Tyler's Blue' - A gorgeous conifer.

Abies fraseri 'Dennys Doll' Maybe 'Denny's Doll'?

    Abies balsamea 'Jamy' - Tiny.

Abies balsamea 'Piccolo' - Tight and lush, nicer then 'Nana' in my opinion.

    Abies fraseri 'Fastigiata Compacta'

Abies fraseri "Fastigiata Compacta" ??? don't look fraseri!

Tell you something Will, that "false" 'Fastigiata Compacta' looks like the Abies nordmanniana 'Trautmann'...

I never understood why Greg Williams gave this one a number instead of a proper cultivar name:
    Abies balsamea '94018'

    Lovely '94018' Edwin.

I bought this as Abies balsamea 'Bear Swamp' but I'm not so sure, compared to the pictures of BS I've seen it just doesn't chime.

  • coniferjoy

Severnside, did you bought your 'Bear Swamp' from Stephen's buddy Gordon?

  • severnside

Lol, no, from another place. It was cheap so I took my chances unseen. Is it not a 'Bear Swamp'?

  • firefightergardener

Here's a closer look for you Edwin/Clement. I'd love a positive ID though maybe it will still be hard to tell.

    Closeup.

    Another bought as
Abies fraseri 'Fastigiata Compacta' - Another imposter?

Abies balsamea 'Weeping Larry' - A Larry Stanley selection, 'weeping' out of the shade of the hydrangea(which I pruned after seeing this photo!)

Abies balsamea 'Piccolo'? - Pretty clearly an imposter.

Abies balsamea 'Frozen Fingers' - Looks pretty tiny!

Nice 'Frozen Fingers', Will. Mine is a slightly older plant but still very tiny. Joe Breau literally froze his fingers when he was collecting this broom, hence the name.

Abies balsamea 'Bruce's Variegated': really shot up this year

Abies balsamea 'Eugene Gold': great color despite being in less than 4 hours of early morning sun, one of my favorites

Abies fraseri 'Old Glory': slow to break bud in spring, color is a little less pronounced as Sam's but mine is in mostly shade.

Abies fraseri 'Klein's Nest': a young plant, I've also seen it spelled 'Kline's Nest'...Edwin??

I think I may have solved the puzzle of my 'Bear Swamp'. The nursery I bought it from did in fact list Abies balsamea '94018' too but told me they had sold out. Comparing mine with Steven's '94018' at Foxhollow it looks very similar.

    Mine

I'm wondering about that 'Bear Swamp' heck of a cultivariant, looks nothing like the average BS. Buds are very pointed.

  • severnside

....could it in fact be Abies normanniana 'Berlin-Dahlem'? I know they list that and this would not be the first time they've mixed labels up...

*Please keep this thread discussion side while this is unravelled please*

  • coniferjoy

Severn, your last pic doesn't show us an Abies balsamea cultivar for sure, they do have differend small and shiney buds.
It's buds are more like Abies nordmanniana, bigg, dull and pointed so 'Berlin-Dahlem' is possible...

  • severnside

Thanks Edwin, they actually list a dark green Abies nordmanniana 'Dahlheim' which though mentioned on the RHS plant database and used by Bluespruce for one of his plants is surely a mistake for 'Berlin-Dahlem'. This was the most compact one, the other specimens seemed to look more like the beginning of spreading forms.

  • severnside

A close up of the buds, definitely nordmanniana.
    {{gwi:608547}}

And because this is a Balsamea gallery I'll add some real 'Bear Swamp' buds to compensate.

Is my bad labelled? Is it really abies balsamea?

Sam, you're right, Rispetto doesn't show us a 'Bear Swamp' for sure ,it's an Abies koreana 'Silberperle' indeed...
