Bis 10 m hoher, zweihäusiger Strauch oder Baum. Blätter breit-lanzettlich, ganzrandig, jung oberseits kurzhaarig, unterseits mit längeren Haaren. Blüten +/- sitzend in den Blattwinkeln, grünlich oder gelblich-weiss, verwachsenkronig, 4-5teilig, die männlichen glockenförmig, ca. 5 mm lang, die weilblichen etwas grösser, tief geteilt, mit 4-5 ausgebreiteten bis zurückgeschlagenen Zipfeln. Frucht beerenartig, kirschgross, zuerst gelb, dann blauschwarz, wohlschmeckend. (Der im TI oft angebaute Kakibaum (Diospyros kaki L.f.) hat apfelgrosse, orangerote Früchte.)
