OSCODA – On Saturday, Oct. 28 Justine Alderete, owner of Jus Create, was announced as the winner of the 2023 Downtown Beautification Committee’s (DBC)Scarecrow Contest.

Alderete’s Halloween display was featured in the Oct. 25 edition of this publication.

Organizers said it was a tough competition with 20 entries from families, businesses and organizations, and more than 15,000 votes cast on the Destination Oscoda website.

Alderete walked away with bragging rights, a crisp $100 bill and a ribbon for one of her scarecrows to wear.

Second place honors went to The Edelweiss Tavern on State Street. Owner Kat Bol received a $50 cash prize and a ribbon for her entry.

Third place – with a $25 prize and a ribbon – was awarded to Great Lakes Realty, also located on State Street. Genevieve Moore attended to claim the prizes.

An Honorable Mention went to Great Lake Salon, as well.

DBC Members Belinda Kusibab and Gina Provenzano spearheaded the 2023 effort, after the scarecrow contest had been dormant for the past 10-plus years.
