How Can Road Rage Affect Your Driving Skills And Judgment?

Dustin Hawley | Jan 15, 2023

Driving-induced road accidents remain one of the most significant problems worldwide, killing about 1.2 million people per year. Road accidents can occur for various reasons, from driving under the influence of alcohol to the topic of this article, road rage. Road rage is an expression of anger by a driver directed toward another motorist or pedestrian. Road rage can be provoked or unprovoked by others. Drivers often get overwhelmed by emotions and are likely to stop thinking rationally, leading to actions that can have far more significant consequences.

How Сan Road Rage Affect Your Driving Skills And Judgment

Let's look at some common causes behind road rage.

Common Causes Behind Road Rage

  • Traffic congestion - Drivers are often enraged by long queues of unmoving traffic. Due to congestion and delays, drivers can lose their patience, inevitably leading to rash driving. There could be several reasons for congestion, from poor traffic management, inadequate infrastructure, or even a standalone event in the neighborhood.

  • Running late - Drivers and passengers running late for appointments are another key cause of road rage. The stress of missing an interview or a flight can bring out the worst in many.

  • Impaired driving - Consumption of alcohol or narcotics reduces drivers’ focus on the road. Motorists under the influence of alcohol also experience heightened emotions, leading to them getting easily enraged.

While it is difficult to explain and pinpoint what exactly constitutes road rage, certain behaviors are considered inappropriate and categorized as road rage incidents. These include tailgating, verbal abuse, speeding, honking incessantly, bumping or ramming into other vehicles, changing lanes without indicators, making aggressive gestures, etc.

Impact Of Road Rage On Driving Skills

  • Lack of discipline. Motorists lose discipline as they succumb to road rage. Drivers tend to become more casual in their approach, changing lanes and parking at reserved spots. This attitude leads to a higher chance of accidents.
  • Poor vehicle handling. A driver prone to road rage is bound to accelerate and brake. It leads to a bumpy and risky ride and can cause significant damage to the vehicle.

How Should I Behave If I’m Prone To Road Rage?

  • Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol at all costs. This way, you save not only yourself but also others on the road.
  • Do not drive if you are tired or had a bad night’s sleep. Drivers experiencing fatigue often lose focus and patience, leading to careless driving.
  • Try leaving earlier for your destination and avoid roads that have traffic congestions. This way, you not only keep your temper under control but also reach your destination on time.
  • Listen to music, podcasts, and audiobooks on your way. You will not only keep yourself occupied throughout the journey but can also learn something new and not focus on things that irritate you.

Summary

Road rage is not a psychological issue - it’s a byproduct of urbanization and increasingly congested roads. To avoid road rage, try to keep your cool at all times while driving. After all, you will not reach your destination any faster if you get into arguments or fights on the road.
