The town of Miltenberg developed under the protection of the Mildenburg since the beginning of the 13th century. The city prospered because the red sandstone from the surrounding mountains was in great demand among builders and was easy to ship on the Main. The magnificent half-timbered buildings in the old town can still tell you about it today. You can also still see a large part of the old city wall and its defensive towers.

Beautiful old town with many half-timbered houses and a town hall from the 13th century
The gas house "Zum Giant" in the middle, you can not miss on a city visit, is the oldest gas house in Germany. At least it is advertised that way.

First mentioned in documents in 1237, the city can look back on an eventful history. Viticulture, wine trade, shipping, fishing, wood and stone industry were the most important growth engines in addition to trade and crafts. The convenient location on the old trade route Nuremberg-Frankfurt and the stacking law gave Miltenberg early economic prosperity. In the early 19th century, however, the city lost its central location in the spa state of Mainz and was from then on the edge of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The big phases of urban development were over and so the medieval cityscape could be preserved until today.
