The rare Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica) was used heavily in the Apple Park landscape in Cupertino. How is that working out? See for yourself. The mulit-color trees shown here are all straight-species Parrotia persica. I like the straight species best for fall color and drought tolerance. Here are some other details I learned in growing hundreds of Persian Ironwoods. 'Vanessa' is the most common cultivar. It has an upright growth habit and yellow fall color. Sounds good, eh? Well, the fall color is much less fun than the straight species. But worse for us in arid climates is that 'Vanessa' appears less tough and drought tolerant than the straight species form. Unfortunately, 'Vanessa' is much more common than the straight species in the nursery trade, and accurate taxa information can be hard to get from nurseries. I have seen Parrotia persica thrive in San Francisco. These trees like mild climates, and do not like hot and droughty ones. They can tolerate quite a lot of shade, and this can be a key to using the trees successfully in warmer climates.

There are couple around the corner from me that the city planted as street trees and they seem to be doing quite well. Not sure about the cultivar but they get zero water from the home owner, yet seem to be quite healthy. Looking forward to seeing them grow larger.
I have seen a few of these over the years but did not know that the Apple complex used them. Thanks for this. You are an asset to our industry.
It was an amazing experience purchasing these with you.
Keep up the great work Dave. Diversity is key to healthy landscape and I am adding Persian Ironwood to my list. Thank you
